Today Armistice or Veterans’ Day is observed around the village square by displays of American flags and white crosses.

Through the years, the community has had different ways to remember November 11th, 1918. In 1934 a program was presented by the students of Metamora Township High School in cooperation with the local American Legion Post 89 at the High School. The event drew a capacity crowd for the two hours of varied entertainment. The Dramatics Club gave a play “America Remembers” depicting America’s tribute to the memory of our war heroes. Piano selections were played by Victorine Waldschmidt. A medley of southern songs were sung by the Girl’s Glee Club, accompanied by Miss Joyce Parker and under the direction of Miss Oda Johnston. Professor Ray J. Schertz, principal of the school, introduced Glenwood Tanton, Commander, who then introduced the speaker of the evening, J.B. Murphy of Bloomington, a district legion official. The program concluded with two vocal numbers entitled “Trees” and “Send Me a Rose From the Homeland” by Miss Eleanor Bachman, accompanied by Mr. Maxey. Taps were played by Bonita Schneider.

The above photo was taken at the Honor Roll Memorial when the American Legion Post 89 and the Legion Auxiliary ladies conducted services in the park on November 11, 1999. All veterans who have served in all the wars were honored on this day.
