In our April 2026 newsletter, we take a deep dive into the faces and stories that shaped our community, from the descendants of Captain Parker Morse to the early 20th-century modernization of Metamora.

Highlights from this issue include:

  • Connecting with the Past: We explore the family history of Captain Parker Morse through a series of old portraits. Highlights include photos of Orin and Martha Cheedle, and a unique look at Bill Cheedle as a youth with his “4-legged chicken”. Special thanks to Bill (now a spry 94!) and his daughter Susan for sharing these precious family links to our Underground Railroad roots.
  • Modernizing Metamora (1915–1917): Look back at the major infrastructure projects of the early 1900s, including the 1917 pledge by the Metamora Good Roads Club to reduce Germantown Hill and the 1915 contract awarded to pave local streets for $15,257.60.
  • Community Life: Revisit stories of community kindness, such as Hon. John McGuire providing free Saturday movies for local children at the Midget Theater in 1916. We also highlight the very first four-year graduating class from Metamora High School in May 1915.
  • Business Milestones: From the opening of new automobile garages to theatrical performances like “Rebecca’s Triumph” at the Low Point Opera House, see how Metamora was growing at the turn of the century.
